A Word on Cosmetic Dentistry

All dentists do some form of cosmetic dentistry, the difference is how it is done and the outcome. There are two primary materials used in cosmetic dentistry, resin and porcelain. Directly bonded resin is a versatile material that in most cases requires no cutting on the natural teeth. This is usually done in one appointment, artistically placing the material directly on the teeth to:

Porcelain can be done as a thin laminate veneer that covers only the front of the teeth and wraps over the edge or as full coverage crowns that go completely around the teeth. Porcelain usually does require some cutting on the teeth to produce.

In performing any of these services the one intangible link is artistic talent. All dentists do not perform these services with artistic eyes. In the ARTISTIC before photograph you see porcelain veneers done with no regard to gender or smile characteristics. They are too square, with sharp, flat edges and all the same length. The lab technician didn't know this patient was female and had no blueprint set up by the dentist as a guide for position, length or contour. In the ARTISTIC after photo notice the softer angles and length difference normally seen in females of this age. The missing link for this patient is the artistic talent provided by Dr. Scott, whether in freehand resin veneers or blueprinted porcelain.
